How to build a society for all to enjoy

20 mins | Oct 12, 2021

We are the architects of our social world. The way some social structures operate is hard to see. Things like family, educational systems, work and dating markets are “the IKEA stores of our lives, steering us along predictable routes.” Social scientists are used to looking at these structures in terms of critical dimensions of human differences such as race, social class and gender. But, genetics will not judge whether structures are sound. They can be used as a tool for seeing structures as they are. The director of the Developmental Behaviour Genetics Lab, Kathryn Paige Harden, argues that if we want to make the social fabric more equal, we can’t blind ourselves to genetics.
