#88 - ‘Squid Game memecoin is a warning’
Today's episode from 5th November 2021. This morning we're talking get rich quick schemes and becoming poorer to save the planet. First, after a cryptocurrency called SquidCoin (which had no affiliation to the popular Netflix show) collapsed- it exposed the unpredictable nature of memecoins. We look at the idea of meme currencies and what they can teach us about the crypto world. Then later, how working less and becoming poorer could stop climate change. We hear the environmental arguments for a four-day work week. So-called 'memecoins' surged as cryptocurrencies, leading to expectations of low risk and high returns. Squidcoin, inspired by the Netflix hit, was the latest sensation until its sudden plunge. From Bloomberg Money, Joanna Ossinger examines the story of this variation of crypto that every investor can learn from down the line. Most people need to work to feel fulfilled. But society seems to forget that a little goes a long way. Richard Nixon in 1956 predicted a four-day work week in the “not too distant future”, and after success in Iceland and the Netherlands, that future might finally be arriving. Our current lifestyles of making and consuming as much as possible has led to the climate crisis. Governments have come up with all sorts of solutions to try and combat this, but this insightful piece by Simon Kuper in the Financial Times suggests that if we want to save the planet, we should start by cutting working hours. Wake up with Curio is a different kind of morning show that gives you the context behind the news and gets you motivated for the day ahead, every Monday - Friday.
