Gardens of the galaxy: can you grow vegetables on Mars?
The plot of The Martian can soon become a reality. In Andy Weir's novel (or Ridley Scott's film), its main character is a botanist stranded in Mars who, to survive until a rescue mission can reach him, needs to figure out how to grow food in very inhospitable conditions. While it may sound as straight-up science fiction, scientists are looking into ways of turning it into a reality. Tim Lewis, writing in the Guardian, explains why.
