#47 - When Women Can’t Get Legal Abortions
Today's episode from 9th September 2021. On today's show: Did you know that evidence suggests abortion restrictions actually lead to more abortions? We look into the dangerous world of unsafe procedures after a sudden decision in Texas to ban abortions after the six-week mark. Then, later on, we're all that "Ah ****, here we go again" meme. Only in our case, we're trudging towards more news about the delta variant. Worry not - we've got some coping strategies psychologists recommend. In a 5-4 decision last week, the Supreme Court of the United States refused to block a Texas law banning most abortions after six weeks. The law does not allow exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, making it the harshest abortion restriction in the country. For Foreign Policy, Neha Wadekar studies examples from around the world that show abortion restrictions have the opposite effect than intended. As many people in the US and worldwide thought the worst part of the pandemic had passed thanks to the rollout of vaccines, the Delta variant appeared. Its stronger resistance to the jabs, as well as a higher level of transmission, has understandably added more strain to our already saturated minds. Still, there are things we can do to weather the information storm. Stacey Colino from The Washington Post talks to a group of experts and finds out what they are. Wake up with Curio is a different kind of morning show that gives you the context behind the news and gets you motivated for the day ahead, every Monday - Friday.
