Either/or questions are part of psychotherapy’s language games
Life isn't black and white; it occurs in the grey areas. Binary questions about emotion are quite often impossible to answer. Our use of language, including words, phrases and meanings of situated speech, are impacted by our early life experiences, meaning that two people in the same conversation can be playing very different 'language games.' Practising psychoanalyst Darren Haber discusses how he enables his patients to articulate their inner turmoil, helping them through language to find a more solid emotional footing and confidence in their own minds and experiences.
