A valid worry about Google morphs into a wrong principle. A bipartisan bill that defines a class of "dominant online platforms" based on their user base's size and market capitalization has passed under the radar. And states preference their products on the platforms they control. In this instalment of Slow Boring, Matthew Yglesias argues that the idea that there is a generalized problem with companies "self-preferencing" and that said businesses need to be banned explicitly on "dominant online platforms" is very misguided. If not appropriately reviewed, it could end up causing more harm than good.
