They have proven themselves to be skilled and ruthless diplomats. The Taliban's swift takeover of Afghanistan has shown the group is not necessarily looking for Western recognition or aid, argues Azeem Ibrahim, a research professor at the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College. Since their removal from power in 2001, they have cultivated a network of allies including Russia and China, and resulting in the US and Europe no longer having any political leverage over them. In turn, this proves the group has all it needs to remain a key player in the Middle East for many years to come.
